The atelier
One craftwoman,
one atelier in Benin.
Maison Hiya is a sewing atelier in Benin, founded by a craftwoman — "your favorite Craftwoman" — who hand-sews made-to-measure batik clothing and rope bags.
Batik
Batik is a resist-dyeing technique: the pattern is drawn in wax, the cloth is dyed, then the wax is removed. The drawing stays by hand, so no two lengths are the same.
Made to measure
Every piece is cut for one person. You choose the fabric and silhouette, share your measurements, and the piece is sewn one stitch at a time.
The bags
Cotton rope is coiled into a spiral and zigzag-stitched for hours, then closed with a gold push-lock clasp.
